WEC 35 came to us all live from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 3, 2008. In sum, it was a night that brought us three championship fights: Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks; Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell; and Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura. Would it be another dominant night for WEC champions?
How about a competitive one? And that's what made this perhaps the best WEC event yet.
Carlos Condit vs. Hiromitsu Miura in a battle of wills
Hiromitsu Miura sure did look a lot better than many gave him credit for coming into this bout. Namely, he used his judo skills on multiple occasions to throw Condit to the ground, limiting the champ's ability to hit home with knees in the clinch as commentator Frank Mir aptly noted. Further, Miura did a great job of escaping multiple submission attempts on the ground and generally came out even on his feet against Condit.
That said, Condit mounted Miura on multiple occasions while on the canvas, pounding away at him even if his submission attempts-rear naked chokes, kneebar, armbars-continually fell short. And in the fourth, the cumulative effect from all of this allowed him to get on top on the ground and start hitting home with multiple punches, none of which were answered. When the referee finally stepped in, Miura did not complain.
He was too tired to. In fact, both fighters were. This was an outstanding fight and a fourth round TKO victory for Condit.
Brian Stann vs. Steve Cantwell in a two round brawl
"I don't think there's a fighter out there that can punish me," said Stann in reference to Steve Cantwell's assertion that he would do just that. "So Steve's in for a rude awakening tonight if that's how he feels."
This one was a brawl, folks.
Both fighters stood toe to toe and swung away. The difference, perhaps, was that Cantwell threw better combinations that hit home to his opponent's body, face and everywhere else you can think of. Eventually from the cumulative effect of these strikes Stann fell to the canvas in the second round.
That was all she wrote.
Steve Cantwell wins via TKO at 4:01 of round two in a very entertaining bout.
Jamie Varner vs. Marcus Hicks in Varner's coming out party
Coming in it seemed that people weren't giving Jamie Varner his just due as champion. Guess is that after this one they will be.
Though Hicks took him down on multiple occasions and nearly sunk in a choke on him, Varner persevered through to his feet. And while on his feet, he clipped Hicks with a huge knee that dizzied him. From there, a tremendous amount of continual strikes hit home on Hicks before he finally fell to the canvas in a heap after several consecutive right hands by Varner. What a jaw Hicks has.
And what a fighter Jamie Varner is.
Jamie Varner wins via KO at 2:08 of round one.
