UFC 87 Review and Results : Georges St. Pierre dominates Jon Fitch
By Robert Rousseau

UFC 87: Seek and Destroy-boy, isn't that an interesting name-took place at the Target Center in Minnesota on August 9th. The main event was one that had a lot of people pretty pumped coming in with Georges St. Pierre putting his UFC Welterweight Championship belt on the line against Jon Fitch. But there was more.

Lots more. And with that, let's hear what happened in Submit To MMA's patented style.

Demian Maia vs. Jason MacDonald in a ground war

Many believed that Jason MacDonald would want nothing to do with Demian Maia on the ground but from the opening bell he proved that he feared no one's ground game as he looked for and got a takedown. Though he was almost caught in both a triangle and rear naked choke in the first round, somehow MacDonald persevered through and did some damage with strikes on top, not to mention a near guillotine choke.

From there, Maia began to take over, however. In the second round, he mounted MacDonald and pounded away at him for the majority of the stanza. In the third, MacDonald found himself on top for a moment.

But it was short lived. Maia eventually mounted him before taking his back and choking him out.

Demian Maia is for real, folks.

Demian Maia wins with a rear naked choke at 2:44 of round number three.

Cheick Kongo vs. Dan Evensen in a one- sided victory

This one wasn't all that competitive, even if Evensen-a man with a kickboxing background - was pretty aggressive on his feet. Still, Kongo used that against his opponent, taking him down hard twice. Though he didn't do much damage while on the canvas, it was a different story on their feet.

Late in the round, Kongo hit home with a hard right that dropped Evensen. Several strikes later on the ground and the end was called.

Cheick Kongo wins after 4:55 of round one by TKO.

Brock Lesnar vs. Heath Herring : Is Brock Lesnar for real?

"Brock Lesnar's a pretty one- dimensional fighter. I've fought bigger wrestlers; I've fought stronger wrestlers; I've fought more accomplished wrestlers. So this is by no means something I haven't done before," said Herring before taking on the former WWE star that was his opponent. Was he underestimating Lesnar or would his words prove true?

That's why they have the fights.

Lesnar started things off in the first stanza with a huge right that dropped Herring. Though his opponent got to his feet right after the strike, Lesnar eventually took him down where he began to dominate things. We're talking about big knees to the ribs, punches, everything. . . Lesnar looked good.

The second round was much of the same, though without the big right hand.

The third round was also much of the same, though without the big right hand.

In the end, Brock Lesnar proved to be a far better wrestler than his opponent. On top of that, his power and athleticism was clearly on display, as afterwards a battered and bloody Heath Herring simply had no answer other than to tough it out.

Brock Lesnar wins by way of unanimous decision.

Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta for the right to fight for the UFC Lightweight Championship?

"No offense to him, but it's a cakewalk," said Huerta coming into his fight against Florian.

Well, maybe not.

This fight didn't really turn out to be the barnburner that many thought it might be. That said, it was a good fight, one that Florian started out somewhat cautiously on his feet in.

Still, throughout Florian took Huerta down on several occasions and took his back and mounted him more than once. Though he had some difficulty with Huerta's aggressiveness on his feet early in the fight, as the rounds went on he began to take over on his feet as well, moving in and out of the danger zone while hitting home with knees, punches, and kicks. A solid performance by the former TUF 1 runner up.

Kenny Florian wins by way of unanimous decision.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch for the right to take on B.J. Penn?

"I think we're gonna have one of the greatest fights in UFC history," said Fitch coming into this fight. Of course, great fights and Georges St. Pierre usually don't go together because the Canadian fighter tends to dominate.

Would Jon Fitch change that?

The fight started off with a St. Pierre takedown and some ground and pound. Later, Fitch got to his feet.

And then ate a huge right hand that dropped him.

The ensuing onslaught by St. Pierre was amazing. But somehow Fitch toughed it out. Amazing that he managed to do so.

But it was still a two- point stanza for St. Pierre..

The second round was close and played out mostly on their feet. That said, St. Pierre's strikes just seemed crisper.

In the third, St. Pierre leveled Fitch with another huge right hand. From there, the Canadian took his opponent's back. But Fitch managed to turn him over.

Later, St. Pierre he slipped through Fitch's legs and got to his feet.

The champion dominated the rest of the round with dizzying strikes and a takedown.

The fourth round was less eventful than the others. Still, St. Pierre gained a takedown at the tail end and probably took it.

St. Pierre dominated the final round, connecting with some very hard strikes to start things off, including a spinning backfist, before taking Fitch down and pounding away at him until the bell sounded. It was a dominant victory for the UFC Welterweight Champion; who by the way, was met in the Octagon after the win by B.J. Penn.

Check out a brief preview of that one below.
