Can Sean Sherk work his way back to UFC Lightweight Champion?
By Robert Rousseau
When Sean Sherk lost to B.J. Penn at UFC 84 by way of a third round TKO many immediately wrote him off. Forget his 32-3-1 overall MMA record. Dismiss the fact that he'd won 15 of his last 16 coming into the Penn bout.
One loss to B.J. Penn and one of the top rated lightweights in the world, the person that many believed was the second best lightweight in the world before the Penn bout, dropped way down in the rankings. Good thing for Sherk that he doesn't seem to be impacted by this.
“I have five fights left (on my contract),” he recently told MMAWeekly.com. “I feel like I have a good, strong future with the UFC still. I feel like I’m a strong part of the organization. Maybe one or two wins will put me back in title contention again.”
In the end, Sherk is likely correct in this assumption, particularly with the rumors swirling about B.J. Penn moving up to welterweight for a title shot against Georges St. Pierre. After all, in a division without Penn is there anyone that Sherk simply couldn't defeat?
Not really, even if the answer to that question becomes somewhat cloudy due to his testing positive for banned substances before the Hermes Franca fight.

"I’ve been real careful with who I’m going to fight. I want to fight contenders; I want to fight top guys,” he said. “I don’t want to fight up and coming guys… I want to fight the best of the best and that’s what I’m doing with my upcoming fight.”
Though the UFC has not officialy confirmed his upcoming UFC 90 bout against Tyson Griffin, both camps have. And guess is that if he defeats Griffin, Sean Sherk will be right back in the mix for a title.
Should be a good fight.
