Frank Shamrock has been cleared to fight, and there is certainly talk about a Frank Shamrock vs. Cung Le rematch. But the interesting thing is that a proposed fight from a while back looks like it's back on the table. We're talking about Frank Shamrock vs. Ken Shamrock, everyone. In fact, that fight could happen next.
On Tuesday, Frank Shamrock, known as The Legend to many, said the following regarding why he was late to a conference call.
"I was at the hospital getting my bone density scans for my arm, and I'll let everybody here be the first to know I'm cleared for combat so Cung Le or Scott Smith or whoever comes out as the victor, or Kimbo Slice, or whoever's been eating their Wheaties, they better keep eating them."
In other words, Shamrock is now cleared to participate in MMA again after breaking his arm in a fight earlier this year against Cung Le. After hearing this news, Doug DeLuca, Executive Chairman of ProElite, said, "there will definitely be a Frank Shamrock- Cung Le rematch. I think we have to sit down with Frank. This is great news that we just got now and we'll have to figure out when that might be."
Further, DeLuca indicated that they would be working with Strikeforce when putting together a rematch between Shamrock and Le. "I like Scott Coker a great deal and they are very, very strong in the San Jose market and Frank Shamrock owns the town of San Jose and Cung is from San Jose so if we're going to do a rematch, it's going to be in San Jose and it's going to be with Strikeforce. So yes, we would definitely do that as a co-promote."
But here's the thing: Frank Shamrock's first fight coming back from injury may not be against the former San Shou Kickboxing Champion. Rather, it may be against his brother, Ken Shamrock.
In other words, Frank Shamrock vs. Ken Shamrock could still very possibly happen. Before the Le rematch, in fact, according to the younger Shamrock.
"I think the Ken fight is really important to get done as soon as possible not only because we're both getting older, but I think now is the time to tell the story of the sport and the families and the brothers and stuff that were involved at the beginning of the sport and how it came to be what it is," said Shamrock. "I think it's an educational opportunity and it's great television so I'd love to get that fight in first (before the Le fight)."
DeLuca agreed that a Frank Shamrock vs. Ken Shamrock fight might be next. "I kind of lean towards Frank. I mean, maybe it's the Ken fight first, but, in promoting, everything is timing and it's about where, when, what the platform for promoting it is … so , we have a lot of unanswered questions, but we're trying to answer them real quickly."
Looks like it may be time for Shamrock vs. Shamrock, people.
