Affliction Banned Review and Results : Fedor chokes out Sylvia
By Robert Rousseau

Affliction: Banned came to us all live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California on July 19, 2008. In sum, it was perhaps the best heavyweight fight card ever put together in the sport of mixed martial arts with the headliner being a match between former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Tim Sylvia and former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion, Fedor Emelianenko.

There were also these fights between Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo and Andrei Arlovski and Ben Rothwell, in case you were wondering.

So, let's get to the review and results in Submit To MMA style.

Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao in the return of The Law

"I want to compete and make a statement that I'm still here," said Lindland before the fight. What he didn't count on, perhaps, was Fabio Negao's toughness.

Still, it was Lindland's night.

Early on Lindland floored Negao with a strong left and nearly pulled off a guillotine choke. In the second, he got caught with an elbow that hurt him. Though he suffered through a flurry of blows by his opponent, Lindland eventually got the fight to the ground where he once again delivered punishment. The third stanza saw Lindland connect with more shots on his feet than his opponent.

Negao proved his toughness but was unable to pull out victory. Lindland, on the other hand, showed some rust from the long layoff but still had enough in the tank.

Matt Lindland wins by way of unanimous decision.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral vs. Mike Whitehead : When two grapplers meet

On one hand, this fight wasn't one of the most exciting fights ever. On the other, the pace picked up in the second and third rounds, with Sobral hitting home with a plethora of solid strikes, including body kicks, knees, right hands, and especially jabs. Likely due to Sobral's striking superiority, Whitehead began looking for takedown after takedown. Though he was successful on multiple occasions with these, every time he got his opponent to the ground it only seemed to spell more trouble for him.

In other words, Sobral nearly pulled off multiple guillotine chokes (two were stopped by the referee because the fighters went through the ropes) and he wasn't able to finish the third. On top of it all, however, Sobral nearly pulled off an omoplata.

In the end, it was all of this that made for a clear victory for Sobral.

Renato Sobral wins via unanimous decision.

Savant Young vs. Mark Hominick in a battle at 145 pounds

Mark Hominick is known as a fighter with a great kickboxing pedigree. But after a pretty uneventful first round, he showed another level to his skills.

After being taken down by Young in the second, Hominick went through multiple triangle choke and armbar attempts before succeeding with an armbar. He looked awful good on his back, people.

Mark Hominick wins via armbar at 4:25 of round two.

Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo in the rematch

"This fight is a big opportunity for me to prove that I am still among the top ten fighters in the world," said Rizzo beforehand. He was right there. Defeating Josh Barnett once again would certainly prove that.

Of course, that only speaks to the difficulty of beating Josh Barnett.

Barnett started off the fight smartly, not going for broke with takedowns but rather keeping Rizzo off balance with front kicks and body kicks. In fact, despite the fact that Rizzo did avoid the one takedown that Barnett attempted in the first stanza and was able to avoid big time punishment, Barnett won the initial stanza on his feet.

The second round was different. Yes, it started out similarly; but then came a huge left from Barnett while Rizzo was backpedaling.

Rizzo was out cold, and Barnett was the winner.

Josh Barnett wins by way of knockout at 1:44 of round two.

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia : Is Fedor as good as we all think?

"I train a lot, but to tell you the truth, everything is simple in my training process. I run a lot. I do lots of exercises and push ups. I work on the technique fighting on the ground and in standing position and I like boxing, as well, as a part of my training process," said Fedor in true Dolph Lundgren style before this fight. But here was the question coming in: Would his old school tactics work against his 6-foot-8 adversary?

In a word, yes.

Fedor Emelianenko furthered his legend in this one. Simply put, as soon as the two fighters came together he connected with consecutive lefts on his feet. Then came a flurry.

That's when Sylvia hit the canvas.

From there, Fedor snaked around to his opponent's back, connected with a few more hard punches, and sunk in the rear naked choke, forcing Sylvia to tap.

Fedor Emelianenko is that good, everyone. He's the best, in fact.

Fedor wins by way of rear naked choke after only 36 seconds to take home the first WAMMA Heavyweight Championship.
